Environmental Operating Solutions, Inc. Receives $150,000 Phase I SBIR Grant from the National Science Foundation

Company to develop innovations in the performance of fixed film biological denitrification systems

BOURNE, MA, September 29, 2010 — Environmental Operating Solutions, Inc. (EOSi) announced today that it had received a $150,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will be used to develop innovations within the performance of fixed film denitrification systems.

“As wastewater dischargers are faced with increasingly stringent nitrogen discharge requirements, fixed film biological nutrient removal systems have become an important part of the solution,” said Eric Stoermer, President & CEO of EOSi. “This grant allows us to develop innovations to improve the performance of these systems, particularly with regard to their ability to successfully utilize non-hazardous, green chemicals instead of methanol, which is flammable and derived from natural gas.”

“The SBIR work fits well into our overall program of applying our non-hazardous, green chemicals to fixed film systems, “ said Samuel Ledwell, Director of Technical Development for EOSi. “Fixed film denitrification systems have traditionally been designed to utilize methanol as the carbon source. Our work increases the number of options that plant operators can utilize, allowing them to trade off on the basis of cost, safety, country of origin and environmental sustainability.”

Below is a list of recent publications that highlight the company’s work in the fixed film area:

MicroC™ Premium Carbon Sources offer the following advantages:

  • Improved Safety: MicroC 1000™ and MicroC 2000™ are completely nonflammable, nontoxic and 100% green products, made from natural, renewable sources of agricultural raw materials.
  • Quality and Consistency: Manufactured to stringent quality specifications.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Manufactured from abundant and renewable agricultural raw materials, sourced in the U.S.
  • Price Stability and Cost Effectiveness: Readily available from domestic resources regardless of market conditions, minimizing the possibility of supply disruptions.
  • Rapid Acclimation Period: Allows plant operators to optimize their dosing rates during plant start-up, maximizing nitrate removal while minimizing chemical costs.
  • Multiple Applications: Used across a broad range of biological contaminant removal applications including nitrogen removal and BOD supplementation.
